Wildflowers and Natives
Queen Anne Lace  ( Daucus carota'):   Showy white flowers and airy
foliage.  Ancestor of the carrot, introduced from Europe, now a common
wildflower throughout North America.

Asclepias tuberosa):  Bright orange flowers in summer
native.

Common Milkweed (
Asclepias syriaca):  Erect stalks reaching 5' + have
large balls of pink flowers.  Very fragrant.  Important food source for
Monarch butterfly larvae.  Naturalized throughout eastern North America

Milkweed (
Asclepias sp.) Native species of unknown name.  Light
green slender leaves and often branching.  Attractive long seedpods
and pail green-white flowers.

Common St. Johns Wart (Hypericum perforatum);  Yellow blooming
summer perenial reaching 30" tall.  
Food source for songbirds, esp. finches.

Shrubby St Johns Wart (Hypericum prolificum)  Yellow shrub form
reaching 4 feet tall.   Holds large masses of small yellow flowers
throughout summer, why plant any other summer blooming shrub?

Prickly Pear (
Opuntia humifusa):  Low growing cactus found in dry
woods and grasslands west of the Mississippi River.  Yellow flowers in
late spring and red fruit in winter

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata):  This perenial vine holds showy
purple pin wheal type flowers through summer followed by very sweat
eatable fruit in fall.  Tennessee's state wildflower.

Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata):  This native legume is one
of the showiest late summer bloomers with heavy sets of bright yellow
pea like flowers.  Deserving of much more attention by gardeners.

Panicled Trefoil (Desmodium paniculatum):  This lavender-pink
blooming perenial  is a welcome sight each fall.  Reaches up to 4 feet
tall.

Sicklepod (Senna Sp.):  A large growing perenial, up to 9 feet tall here
at the nursery.  Bright yellow pea-like flowers along the stems in
summer and fall.  Seed pods hang down like long beans, often
reaching 12+ inches.  Related to the sensitive plant and the leaves fold
up at night.   I grow these along the south wall of my house for shade.

Ivy-Leafed Morning Glory (Ipomoea hederacea).  Rapid growing annual
vine with small blue flowers each morning.  The leaves have three
lobes creating the effect of Ivy so very attractive even after the blooms
close in the afternoon.  I grow this species on my porch to provide
shade.

False Dragons Head (Physostegia virginiana):  Easy to grow perenial
wildflower with blue snap-dragon like flowers all summer.  A must
have .

Trumper Vine (Campsis radicans):   This woody vine holds stunning
orange trumpet  shaped flowers through summer.

White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)  This naturalized species is
common throughout North America.  White flowers in early summer
(and again if mowed) top fern like leaves.  Can be used as an herb

Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria):  An annual coreopsis but
easily reseeds year to year.  Bright yellow flowers with red centers
contrast the airy foliage.  Grows to 18 inches tall.

Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lancifolia):  Perenial yellow flower that
blooms spring and early summer.  This native is common in wildflower
mixes and has become a staple in perenial gardens.   Large flowers
than most species in this genus.

Bitterweed (Helenia amarum):  Don't let the name scare you off.  This
low growing reseeding annual (up to 15 inches) offers true yellow
flowers throughout summer in some of the harshest soils.  The flower
petals fold down leaving a button effect on top.  I do not recomend
growing this near dairy cows.

Black Eye Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)  This semi perenial flower is one of
the best known wildflowers.  Bright orange-yellow daisy like flowers
with black centers are held 2 feet up in most grasslands.  The fuzzy
leaves set this apart form the other black eye susans.   A must have for
any garden, formal or not.
Attracts butterflies, finches feast on the seed.

Confederate Violate (Viola priceana)  This spring blooming perenial
makes an ideal groundcover in the perenial garden.   The flowers are
white petals with a lavender eye and accents.  Very attractive.   This
plant is one from my childhood, remembering those that my grandma
had growing along the north side of her house.

Halbrert-Leafed Rose Mallow:   This native hybiscus will reach up to 7
feet tall.  Color variation in the flower ranges from a soft pink with a
crimson eye to pure white with the same eye.  The leaves are 3 pointed
with the center lobe long and narrow,   please note that I have other
wild species of hibiscus in the area which sometimes cross as they do
in nature, the Halbert-Leafed is the dominate trait in genetic character
in these crosses.

I have taken several years building up my wildflower collection and will
add more offerings as my plants mature over time.    All seed is
collected from land owned and managed by Peach Grove Nursery and
Gardens under regulations and licence of the Tennessee Department
of Agricuture.  All seed harvesting is done in an manner than does not
deplete the natural populations and is processed by hand.
